Hair loss, thinning and dryness: how much is visible.

How it's assessed

Each item here is checked as a visible condition and answered none, mild, moderate or severe. If it can't be seen in your photo, the answer is none, and most healthy adults show none for most items. The full explanation is on the Features overview.

Hair Loss

A receding hairline or visible bald patches. A fringe, a hat or a styled hairline can hide it, so the grade is only as good as what the camera can see.

Thinning Hair

Reduced density across the top or crown, where the scalp shows through more than it should. It is easier to see in bright overhead light and harder in soft light or with longer styles.

Dry Hair

Hair that looks brittle, frizzy or dull rather than smooth and healthy. Styling products, washing habits and heat damage all affect it, which makes it one of the more changeable items.
