Submental Definition

1 min read · Updated October 4, 2026

How clean the area under the chin and along the neck looks.

What it is

The submental area is the space under the chin. Submental definition is how clearly the line between the underside of the jaw and the neck shows, without a soft pad of tissue in between.

What a high score looks like

A high score is a sharp, clean transition from jaw to neck. A low score shows soft tissue under the chin, which blurs the line, often called a double chin.

What affects it

Body fat, posture and the angle of your head matter most. Tucking your chin down creates a fold even on a lean person, so look straight ahead with the head level. Lighting from below flattens the area while light from above shadows it. Hydration and sleep move it slightly.

How it's graded

Angularity is judged visually, not measured from landmarks: an AI model looks at the photo and grades the feature from 1 to 10 against people of the same sex, where 5 is typical. Because soft-tissue definition depends heavily on light and angle, treat the score as a read of this photo.
